Workshop Summary and Key Benefits:

This crash course is specially designed to provide an overview of key aspects associated with road safety for practicing engineers, young and dynamic faculty members, consultants, and research students, enabling them to gain practical insight. The first topic will focus on the road safety challenges faced in the country, followed by an overview of the pilot study on the vectored approach deployed for ADAS implementation in 250 buses in Nagpur city, along with evaluation of speed management at blackspots. The second topic will be an introduction to the public-health approach to road safety, the third topic will be an overview of the fundamentals of Epidemiological Methods in Road Safety Research, and the fourth topic will focus on laws and legislation’s for road safety. The fifth topic will cover the application of tactical urbanism as a tool for piloting solutions in typical pre-urban and urban corridors as well as urban intersections. The sixth topic will cover research studies related to surrogate safety measures deduced for blackspots, supported by selected corridor- and intersection-level case studies. The seventh topic will cover the ongoing pursuit toward automation of the Road Safety Auditing (RSA) procedure as per IRC: SP-88 (2019), with emphasis on Operation and Maintenance Stage RSA.

Workshop Summary and Key Benefits: This workshop will involve discussions on utilization of mechanics-based principles for structural analysis of pavements idealized as multi-layered elastic structures. Separate formulations will be developed for analysis of bituminous and concrete pavements due to load (static) and temperature. The numerical schemes to employ these formulations will be presented.
This workshop will provide an exposure to the participants about the underlying principles used for analysis of pavement structure, the associated assumptions and complexities involved with advanced analysis problems (for example, dynamic loading, damage propagation). This workshop will introduce the participants with the background knowledge to help them start developing their own pavement analysis formulations.        
Intended Audience:
Pavement researchers who are interested to know about the mechanics based theory behind the estimation of stress-strain-deformation within a pavement structure.

The workshop will provide a deep dive into multimodal data that have been historically used to study safety critical events, driver behaviour, and road safety. Data modality includes kinematic data (speed, acceleration), location data, radar, videos (vehicle, and infrastructure mounted), and LiDARs. The sessions will cover

Workshop Summary and Key Benefits: Writing a paper can seem daunting for students and early academics. But, by thinking carefully, building a strong motivation, and positioning the research within the context of the extant literature, one can get a good start on a paper. Of course, writing a paper is not a one-shot deal. It is an iterative procedure, where an individual prepares a first draft, reviews it and makes changes to make things flow better, then reviews the second draft and makes changes to prepare a third draft, and so on. At a minimum, this process should be continued at least five times. In each draft, there are many issues to keep in mind, including flow and coherency, tight and crisp writing, appropriate sentence structures, and the use of carefully chosen words to relay the right scholarly tone for the reader. As important is the issue of being meticulous and paying attention to detail: no spelling mistakes, ensuring that all references are listed at the end, designing and preparing the tables and figures to look professional, and coordinating the text with tables/figures. At the same time, writing a technical paper is similar to writing a story; the story should start from the motivation and proceed all the way to the conclusion, where the story gets completed. In this context, it is the responsibility of the author to hold the reader’s hand and take the reader through an interesting journey from beginning to end, by providing context, background, and weaving a compelling narrative. As with writing the original paper, the rebuttal (and changes made to the paper) in response to reviewer comments must be comprehensive and convincing. Reviewers must feel like their comments have been given careful attention and responded to in a clear, succinct, and coherent fashion. If authors do not quite see eye-to-eye with a particular comment of a reviewer, clear justification and backing for the alternative position must be provided.

This two-part workshop (1.25 hours each) will inform students of the considerations just mentioned, and take students through a series of papers to demonstrate the nuances of writing a good paper and providing an appropriate response to reviewer comments, with a series of case studies and examples.

This workshop will provide participants with knowledge and practical skills on next generation traffic signal control, focussing on the challenges and opportunities for India. It will account for heterogeneous and lane-less traffic conditions for signal control design, covering aspects such as warrants for phase plan development, delay model formulation, and cycle time optimisation based on queuing theory principles. A software tool for easy field implementation will be demonstrated. Drawing on the state of the practice in Australia, the workshop will highlight lessons that can be adapted for India, while also identifying research needs and limitations of conventional approaches in addressing complex urban traffic conditions.

Workshop Summary and Key Benefits:
The workshop aims to develop fundamental skills needed for transportation research for applying machine learning (ML) algorithms with required computer coding skills to explore, describe, analyse, model, and test datasets. The objectives are to provide participants with: (i) A generic background in the application of various ML algorithms (supervised and unsupervised) in transportation; (ii) Fundamentals and case studies of selected ML algorithms (iii) Applications of open-source software in executing such ML algorithms. The key benefit for the participant is to gain proficiency in applying these algorithms to travel demand modeling, travel behaviour analysis, freight transport planning, traffic safety and transit facility planning.
Intended Audience:
This workshop is designed for industry consultants or government authorities (like transportation planners, traffic engineers, data analysts, urban planners), academicians, PhD and master’s students, and researchers who wish to learn and apply modern data science and machine learning techniques to solve complex transportation planning problems. A basic understanding of statistics and data analysis is recommended but not required.
